Parents and AI: Are We Practising What We Preach to Our Kids?

Parents and AI: Are We Practising What We Preach to Our Kids?

Let’s be honest: most of us have a “thing” we do when we’re stuck as parents.

Some of us call our mums. Some of us blast a question into the family WhatsApp group and brace for twelve different opinions. Some of us Google it at 11pm while pretending to scroll Instagram.

And more and more of us quietly, almost sheepishly are asking AI.

“Is it normal for a 2-year-old to refuse all vegetables?” “How do I get my toddler to stop hitting when he’s frustrated?” “What’s a nice way to reply to this teacher’s message without sounding defensive?” “My baby won’t nap unless I’m holding her. Tips?”

If you’ve done this, you’re in very good company. A 2026 survey of over 1,000 parents in the US found that 81% had used AI for parenting-related tasks , 43% weekly, 15% even daily and two-thirds said it genuinely lightened their mental load.

There’s no reason Singapore parents look much different, especially with our juggling-a-thousand-things lifestyle.

We’re so focused on our kids and AI, we forgot to look at ourselves

Here in Singapore, there’s a lot of energy going into how AI affects our children, screen time, attention spans, whether they’ll still know how to do long division without a chatbot doing it for them. Singapore’s updated National AI Strategy this year talks about harnessing AI for good while managing the risks, and at National Day Rally 2026, PM Lawrence Wong spoke about embracing new tech while keeping people and safeguards at the centre.

All important stuff. But notice something: almost all of it is about our kids’ relationship with AI.

Barely anyone is asking the same question about us, the parents.

And maybe we should. Because if we’re telling our children “don’t lean on a chatbot for everything,” it’s worth checking whether we’re doing exactly that ourselves, just with better excuses.

Why we reach for it (and honestly, it makes sense)

Nobody’s judging here, the appeal is real, and pretty understandable when you think about it:

  • It’s available whenever. No waiting for a reply, no need to “not want to bother anyone.”
  • It doesn’t get tired of your questions. Ask about sleep regression for the fifth time this month, no sighing, no “didn’t I already tell you this?”
  • It feels judgment-free. Easier to type “I lost my temper today and feel terrible” to a chatbot than say it out loud to your mother-in-law.
  • It clears small decision fatigue. What’s for dinner with enough protein, what activity to do on a rainy Saturday, how to word a message to the teacher, AI can take a few of these tiny, draining decisions off your plate.

None of that is bad on its own. A quick assist so you have more energy left for actual bonding time with your kids? Sounds great, honestly.

But here’s the mindfulness bit, the same thing we tell our kids, applies to us too

We often remind our children: don’t believe everything a screen tells you, and don’t let it replace real thinking or real people. Fair reminder for us too.

A few things worth keeping in mind:

AI can sound confident and still be wrong. Especially for anything to do with your child’s health or development, always double check with an actual paediatrician or a trusted source, not just the first answer you get.

It doesn’t know your child. It didn’t see the meltdown five minutes ago, doesn’t know your child’s just been extra clingy since grandma flew home, and can’t read the look on their face. You have all that context, don’t let a general answer override your gut instinct.

Watch out for decision fatigue turning into decision outsourcing. There’s a big difference between “give me a few ideas for handling tantrums” and asking it to basically tell you what to do every single time your child acts up. One sharpens your own thinking. The other slowly chips away at your confidence as a parent.

Mind what you share. Your child can’t consent to their sleep habits, fears or behaviour being typed into a chatbot. A little privacy-awareness goes a long way.

Notice if it’s becoming your only outlet. If a chatbot is where all your parenting stress goes instead of your partner, a friend, or your own village, that’s worth noticing. AI is a decent thinking partner. It’s not a substitute for real human connection, and it definitely can’t give you a hug after a rough day.

A few simple habits to stay in control of it (not the other way round)

  • Use it for ideas, not verdicts. Ask for options, not a final answer, then decide using what you know about your own child.
  • Set yourself a “check-in” rule. If you’re asking AI about the same worry three times a week, that might be a sign to actually see a doctor, teacher or counsellor instead.
  • Keep your village alive. Balance the late-night AI chats with an actual coffee session with a friend who gets it, nothing beats real empathy.
  • Talk about it with your co-parent. So you’re both aware of how much you’re leaning on it, and can support each other instead.
  • Model it for your kids, eventually. The same way we’ll teach them to question what AI tells them, let’s practice that ourselves first.

At the end of the day

Using AI to help with the small, tiring stuff of parenting isn’t something to feel guilty about, most of us are doing it, and it genuinely does take some weight off. The point isn’t to swear it off. It’s just to stay aware, the same way we hope our kids will be one day: use it, don’t lose yourself in it.

Because no chatbot, however helpful, knows your child the way you do. And that’s a job no AI is ever getting.
