Breastfeeding vs Formula: Myths, Facts & Parent Guide

Confused about breastfeeding or formula feeding? Learn the facts behind common breastfeeding myths and make an informed feeding choice for your baby.

Few topics in parenting attract as many opinions as breastfeeding.

The moment you announce you’re expecting, the advice starts pouring in. “Breast is best.” “Just keep trying.” “Formula is only a last resort.” “If you really wanted to, you’d make it work.”

The truth? Every family’s feeding journey is different.

As we observe World Breastfeeding Week, it’s a good time to celebrate breastfeeding while also replacing judgement with understanding. Whether you breastfeed, formula feed, pump, or combine both, every parent deserves support.

Let’s clear up some of the most common breastfeeding myths.

Myth #1: Every mum can breastfeed.

The truth:
While many mothers are able to breastfeed successfully, it doesn’t happen easily for everyone.

Some face medical conditions, previous breast surgery, hormonal challenges, severe pain, tongue-tie issues, or low milk supply. Others may experience mental health struggles or need medications that affect breastfeeding.

Needing help or choosing another feeding method doesn’t make you any less of a parent.

Myth #2: Formula-fed babies are less healthy.

The truth:
Breast milk provides antibodies and unique immune benefits, but modern infant formula is carefully designed to provide complete nutrition for babies who need it.

Many formula-fed children grow up healthy, happy and thrive.

The most important thing is that your baby is well-fed and growing well.

Myth #3: Breastfeeding should hurt.

The truth:
Some tenderness during the first few days is common, but ongoing pain isn’t.

Persistent pain may be caused by:

  • Poor latch
  • Tongue-tie
  • Engorgement
  • Blocked milk ducts
  • Infection

Pain shouldn’t simply be endured. A lactation consultant or healthcare professional can often help identify the cause.

Myth #4: Small breasts produce less milk.

The truth:
Breast size has very little to do with milk production.

Milk supply depends more on hormones, how often milk is removed, and individual physiology than breast size.

Myth #5: If you use formula once, breastfeeding is over.

The truth:
Many families successfully practise mixed feeding.

Some babies receive breast milk during the day and formula at night. Others switch between direct nursing and expressed milk depending on work schedules.

Feeding doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Myth #6: You must breastfeed for as long as possible.

The truth:
Health organisations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months where possible, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods if it works for both mother and child.

But every family’s circumstances are different.

Returning to work, medical reasons, personal wellbeing and family needs all play a role. There isn’t a single “perfect” breastfeeding duration.

Myth #7: Breastfeeding is what makes you a good mum.

The truth:
This may be the biggest myth of all.

Being a good parent isn’t measured by how your baby is fed.

It’s measured by the love you give, the comfort you provide, the sleepless nights you endure, the cuddles you share, and the countless decisions you make every day to care for your child.

Your feeding choice is just one part of your parenting journey.

Let’s Replace Judgement with Support

Behind every feeding decision is a story.

Perhaps breastfeeding came naturally.

Perhaps it didn’t.

Perhaps a mum returned to work earlier than expected.

Perhaps she struggled with postpartum recovery.

Perhaps she simply chose the feeding method that worked best for her family.

We rarely know the full story.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s celebrate breastfeeding while also remembering that compassion matters just as much.

Instead of asking,
“Why aren’t you breastfeeding?”

Perhaps we should ask,
“How are you doing?”

Because every baby deserves to be well-fed.

And every parent deserves to feel supported, not judged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breastfeeding better than formula feeding?

Breastfeeding provides unique immune benefits and is recommended when possible. However, infant formula is a safe and nutritionally complete alternative when breastfeeding isn’t possible or isn’t the family’s preferred choice.

Can I combine breastfeeding and formula feeding?

Yes. Many parents successfully use mixed feeding, combining breast milk and formula based on their baby’s needs and family circumstances.

Does breast size affect milk supply?

No. Breast size does not determine how much milk a mother can produce.

Should breastfeeding hurt?

No. While some initial tenderness is common, ongoing pain is not normal and should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

What matters most when feeding a baby?

A baby who is well-fed, growing well, and cared for by parents who feel supported and informed.
